The Danganronpa series would be nothing without its characters. Each game features an ensemble cast, making the students and their relationships one of the core pillars of the games. This guide will take a look at the best Danganronpa Characters and which characters are our favorite.
Danganronpa Characters Listed
Characters like Nagito Komaeda and Kyoko Kirigiri are already pretty popular, and rightfully so. But there are also some other characters who are not as beloved by fans and still deserve recognition (though they certainly have fans themselves).
Monokuma (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc)
What would a list of Danganronpa characters be without the game’s mascot himself? Monokuma is the sadistic teddy bear in charge of marshaling the killing games and class trials. From his snappy remarks to his creative killing methods, Monokuma is a delight to watch throughout the games. He is a huge part of Danganronpa’s charm and gives players a fighting spirit as they rally against him and try to overcome his tricks.
Gundham Tanaka “Ultimate Breeder” (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair)
Though not one of the most popular characters in the series, Gundham is on this list because of how much fun he is. He takes the role of a flamboyant dark lord with powers beyond the comprehension of mere mortals. By doing his Free Time events, you learn that much of how he portrays himself on the outside. He uses it as a shield to prevent others from seeing how he feels on the inside.
He cares deeply about nature and animals, and he seems to be endearingly socially awkward. And in the end, we learn how much he actually cares for his friends and that, no matter what he says, he values them more than anything else.
Nagito Komaeda “Ultimate Lucky Student” (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair)
If you’ve heard of Danganronpa, you’ve definitely heard of Nagito Komaeda. Nagito is well known for his idealism, extremism, and penchant for both intentional and unintentional chaos. Nagito is a character with many different layers.
Though he may at first be seen as a kind individual, he quickly reveals the various, complex sides of himself that have drawn lots of fans to him. He’s also known for his more insane acts in the name of hope, bonus, and unlockable material, Danganronpa 2 reveals his story as a tragedy and that his actions might not be so delusional after all.
Sakura Ogami “Ultimate Martial Artist” (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc)
Another character who isn’t necessarily the most popular is Sakura, who still has a lot of reasons to make this list. Sakura has a heart of gold. She cares deeply about her friends and their hope of escaping, no matter what Monokuma or the killing game throws at her. She’s strong both physically and emotionally, often becoming the anchor for many of the other characters.
During her free-time events, we often see a fiercely determined girl with her own depth and eccentricities. Whether you spend extra time with her or not, she proves to be one of the first game’s most interesting characters.
Gonta Gokuhara “Ultimate Entomologist” (Danganronpa v3: Killing Harmony)
Despite his buff exterior, Gonta is a kind and gentle soul. He just wants to be a proper gentleman and share his love of insects with his friends. Both his personality and his design feature a ton of fun contrasts:
- Buff, Goku-like build vs his friendly demeanor.
- His intensity of emotions vs the gentleness he reserves for his bugs
- His naiveté vs his intelligence
Despite all the chaos caused by the killing game, his gentle and cheery attitude is a therapeutic constant.
Kirumi Tojo “Ultimate Maid” (Danganronpa 3: Killing Harmony)
There is nothing that Kirumi Tojo can’t do. As the Ultimate Maid, she excels at abiding by others’ orders and executing them flawlessly. Though at first, she may just appear to be an obedient servant, as the game goes on, she is actually shown to be extremely sharp and intelligent. There’s more going on with her than others are aware of, and that’s part of what makes her so interesting.
Chihiro Fujisaki “Ultimate Programmer” (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc)
Shy and timid, Chihiro Fujisaki is a character of hidden and unknown strengths. Even though he may be seen as a side character or as someone who will be forever relegated to the sidelines, in the end, his actions are what end up massively turning the tide for the other characters. He might not be seen as significant at first, but by the end of the first game, he is a reassuring prescience, which shows that, in the end, he has the heart of a hero.
Fuyuhiko Kuzuriyu “Ultimate Yakuza” (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair)
One of Danganronpa 2’s greatest achievements is how they turned Fuyuhiko from an unlikable jerk to someone with whom we come to care and sympathize. Though he might be grouchy and crabby on the outside, on the inside, he hides a lot of emotion and pain.
At first, he doesn’t act like it, but he cares about those he holds close. This is to a point where he sees it as a weakness for a Yakuza to feel this way, but in the end, it ends up being one of his greatest strengths of all.
Kokichi Oma “Ultimate Supreme Overlord” (Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony)
Believe it or not, this little guy is the supreme overlord of….something. Regardless, Kokichi is a force of pure chaos throughout the entire killing game. He doesn’t care if everyone lives and dies as long as it’s interesting.
His blatant chaos and stirring of the pot is one of the reasons why he’s become so popular with fans. Throughout Danganronpa V3, you also get the sense that he knows more than he’s letting on….
Kyoko Kirigiri “Ultimate Detective” (Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc)
Stoic and smart, Kyoko is the player’s guiding hand throughout the first game. Her confidence and her cunning make her a compelling character, but what we learn about her and her past is what helps make her one of the series’ most popular characters. Underneath her serious exterior is someone who we come to see as a friend who might need us as much as we need her.
Danganronpa is available now on iOS, Android, PSP, PSVITA, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
